April Rose Reyes Dorado is no stranger to the challenges of juggling life’s responsibilities.
As a proud graduate with a Caregiver Professional Diploma from the Filipino Institute-Abu Dhabi campus, this Filipina’s journey from student to successful professional was anything but smooth.
Yet, through perseverance and a clear vision, she managed to transform her obstacles into stepping stones.
“At first it’s hard for me to focus in my study because my mind is divided into two – being a student and being a mother,” shares April.
Her journey wasn’t just about personal achievement.
“My two little princesses inspired me to strive for excellence in my academics. I’m doing all my best to be a good role model and mother for them.”
The journey of a mother is seldom undertaken alone. April mentions another significant influence on her path: “Aside from my family, one person also inspired me to strive and achieve my goal. This is our trainer, Nancy Benedicto Malabag. She taught us a lot of things and helped us be the best versions of ourselves.” She is also deeply grateful to the Filipino Institute-Abu Dhabi for believing in her potential. “Thank you for giving us a chance to prove to ourselves that we can be professionals too.”
Obstacles were numerous on her path. From time management issues, stemming from her responsibilities as a mother and wife, to battling self-doubt and fear of failure.
However, April developed systems and methods to overcome these hurdles. “I used to overcome [time management challenges] by setting a Gantt chart wherein I’m setting a realistic target. Managing time is a very common challenge on the journey to goal achievement… Counteract this by creating a new schedule for myself with daily and weekly tasks.”
She goes on to explain how negative thinking and a lack of confidence can deter one from their goals. “Sagging confidence is the scourge of goal achievement… I overcame these challenges by committing to my goals, reminding myself daily about why I want to reach them.”
She also stresses the importance of being surrounded by positivity.
“Try to surround yourself with positive people who believe in your abilities… thanks to my colleagues and trainers for inspiring me to do my best.”
April reveals her strategy for maintaining equilibrium: “I balance everything by setting a plan, making a weekly to-do list, prioritizing my works, and breaking large tasks into smaller components.”
She advocates for a balanced approach to life, especially for women in her position.
“With the proper balance, both being a mother and pursuing a profession can be fulfilling experiences.”
April’s journey serves as a testament to her belief: “Pursuing our dreams is not easy. We need to exert a lot of effort, time, and money, but when we fulfill our dreams, it’s a lifetime accomplishment.”
Her advice for others, especially mothers looking to continue their education, is clear: set a clear goal, manage your time effectively, and most importantly, “DO NOT QUIT.”
She concludes, “Always be positive, believe in yourself, trust in the knowledge and skills that you’ve acquired because nothing is impossible.”
