A unique Filipino community is flourishing, driven by compassion, understanding, and a shared mission to support neurodivergent individuals and their families. This community, known as the Ausome Family Journey (AFJ), has rapidly become a vital source of support, education, and inclusion for families navigating the complexities of autism and other developmental challenges. At the forefront of this initiative is Pamela Amor Calinog, an autism mom with a deep personal connection to the cause, and her steadfast co-admin, Ciela Mae Tomawis.
Pamela’s journey into the world of autism advocacy began with her eldest son, Daniel, who was diagnosed with Global Developmental Delay (GDD) at 2 and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) at 6. Her quest for knowledge led her to study Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and eventually become a Learning Support Assistant (L.S.A.) in one of the UAE’s prestigious schools. Using her expertise, Pamela has been a guiding light for many students, applying her insights as an ABA therapist to help them thrive.
The inception of AFJ in February 2023 was spurred by the challenges Pamela and her friends faced while using social media to connect and support each other. Among these early pioneers was Mommy Dei, a former admin whose initial contributions laid the groundwork for what AFJ would become. When the idea of creating a Facebook page was almost shelved, Pamela’s husband encouraged her to persist, seeing the potential for a platform that could unite Filipino families facing similar challenges. With the help of Ciela Mae, a pediatrician turned devoted mother and advocate, and her son Lyle, the Ausome Family Journey Facebook group came to life, offering a haven for parents to share, learn, and connect.
Empowering through events and resources
AFJ has organized a series of events aimed at educating, supporting, and celebrating the families within the community. From Therapy Talks and Coffee Bonding sessions to the family-centric AFJ Family Day and the sports-themed AFJ Palarong Ausome, the group has fostered a sense of belonging and mutual support. The success of these events is also due to dedicated volunteers like Miss Shai and Mommy Aika, whose behind-the-scenes efforts have been invaluable. Furthermore, the community serves as a critical resource for navigating the benefits available to People of Determination in the UAE, offering guidance on obtaining essential services and supports like the POD card, Sanad Card, and various exemptions.
As AFJ approaches its first anniversary in April 2024, coinciding with Autism Awareness Month, the community is excited to launch a diverse inclusion program. This initiative will feature arts and crafts, therapy talks, and a series of activities designed to celebrate neurodivergence and promote inclusivity. This celebration not only marks a milestone for AFJ but also underscores the community’s commitment to creating a more accepting and understanding society.
The success of the Ausome Family Journey would not be possible without the support of collaborating centers, therapists, doctors, and, most importantly, the families who share in the vision of the community. The tagline “One Goal, One Heart, Different Journey” perfectly encapsulates the spirit of AFJ, highlighting the collective drive towards autism awareness and the celebration of every individual’s unique journey.
As AFJ continues to grow and impact lives, Pamela and Ciela Mae remain dedicated to their mission, offering a beacon of hope and a community of support for Filipino families in Dubai and beyond.
