How a journalism teacher found her place in Dubai’s corporate world

Working overseas often means stepping out of your comfort zone and into unfamiliar challenges. Patricia Mae M. Estenoso embraced this leap, leaving behind a teaching career in journalism in the Philippines to pursue her passion as a creative copywriter in Dubai, where she now specializes in corporate branding and technology.

Currently working at CXO Strategies FZ LLC, Patricia has spent the past three years honing her craft in an unfamiliar yet exciting territory—corporate branding and technology.

“I started as a creative copywriter here in 2021,” she shares with The Global Filipino Magazine. “At that time, I had zero clue about writing for corporate branding and technology. I made a lot of mistakes—and I still do—but the journey has been incredibly rewarding.” Today, Patricia manages event branding and storytelling projects for Dell Technologies, a role she describes as both challenging and fulfilling. Her dedication was recently recognized with a Certificate of Appreciation for her contributions during Dell Technologies’ GITEX 2024 exhibition.

Roots in writing and discovery of visual creativity

Before moving abroad, Patricia built a solid foundation in the Philippines as a journalism instructor, freelance writer, and magazine editor. “I always loved writing, but I never imagined myself delving into corporate-level content,” she says. Through her experience, Patricia discovered another layer to her skill set—an eye for design. “I’m not a designer, but I’ve realized how crucial visual elements are in marketing. That awareness has pushed me to grow not just as a writer but as a creative professional.”

This thirst for growth paved the way for her move to Dubai, where she’s learned to balance creativity, quality, and speed in her work. “My boss and our clients set clear expectations, which helped me push myself and learn the ropes of branding and technology.”

Patricia’s decision to move abroad in 2021 was not without struggles. Leaving her home amid the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, she faced health concerns, anxiety, and the daunting task of traveling alone. However, the words of her grandmother—“Wag mong hayaan na hanggang pagtanda mo, eto lang ang makikita mo” (“Don’t let this be the only thing you see in your lifetime”)—resonated deeply, propelling her to embrace the unknown.

Finding a job in Dubai was another challenge, requiring her to juggle freelance gigs while adjusting to a different style of writing. “Feedback was hard to handle at first, but my boss, my previous manager, and even our client were tough yet instrumental in mentoring me.”

Finding fulfillment and opportunities

One of Patricia’s favorite aspects of working overseas is the humility it instills and the opportunities it offers. “I’m now actively involved in organizations like the Emirates Literature Foundation, the American Copy Editors Society, and the Association of Writers & Writing Programs. These are opportunities I wouldn’t have had back home—or they would have taken three times the effort to achieve.”

Her role also brings immense satisfaction. “The work is demanding but rewarding. Balancing creativity, quality, and speed is a skill I’ve developed here, and it’s something I’m deeply proud of.”

Looking ahead, Patricia is focused on expanding her personal projects, such as a writing newsletter and a LinkedIn video series aimed at helping aspiring and mid-career writers. “I often receive messages from people seeking advice on their writing challenges. It’s tough being a creative, especially for introverted or anxious writers like me, but I want to help them grow and showcase their work.”

Long-term, she envisions supporting more advocacies to empower writers and creatives, ensuring they find their voice and confidence in competitive fields.

Patricia encourages her fellow Filipinos to remain resilient. “Always go back to Him. When you feel stuck or doubtful, pray for guidance. And never forget your loved ones. Even if you’re physically alone abroad, open up and share your struggles with them.”

She also highlights the importance of community. “Finding good friends abroad can be challenging, but even a few supportive relationships can make a huge difference.”

Reflecting on her three years abroad, Patricia emphasizes the growth she has achieved, not only in her career but also as a person. “Every challenge has been a stepping stone. It’s been tough, but I’m grateful for the journey and excited for what’s to come.”
