How a former service crew member built a thriving career in Dubai’s real estate and film industries

For many overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), building a successful career abroad is both a challenge and a dream fueled by determination and sacrifice. Aquino Plotado embodies this journey, carving a legacy of excellence that spans real estate, film, and more. A resident of the UAE for over 13 years, his rise from humble beginnings in Baao, Camarines Sur, Philippines, is a testament to unwavering grit and passion. From hospitality to real estate and now filmmaking, Aquino’s inspiring path resonates with those striving to turn aspirations into reality.

Aquino’s career began far from the glitz and glamour he now enjoys. As a service crew member at Jollibee, he learned the value of hard work, a lesson he carried with him through his tenure with some of the world’s most prestigious hotel brands, including Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton, and St. Regis. Over his years in hospitality, he amassed more than 80 awards, solidifying his reputation for excellence.

Later, Aquino transitioned into the sports industry, contributing to projects at the International Cricket Council (ICC) Academy, Dubai International Stadium, and the pre-opening of the Zabeel Sports District under EMAAR Entertainment. Each chapter of his journey built the skills and connections that would propel him to his next venture—real estate.

In the UAE’s competitive real estate market, Aquino quickly established himself as a top performer. His career soared with a landmark AED 15 million deal at FAM Properties and continued to shine when he joined Metropolitan Premium Properties, closing a deal on his very first day. Most recently, Aquino made headlines with the sale of an AED 17,148,750 penthouse at the Danah Bay project in Ras Al Khaimah’s Marjan Island. Reflecting on his success, Aquino shared, “Every deal I close is not just a business achievement but a step toward showing what’s possible when you combine passion and hard work.”

Conquering the film industry

Aquino is not just a real estate magnate—he is also an emerging force in filmmaking. His recent project, As The Call So The Echo, clinched two major awards—Best Actor and Best Director—at the Emirates Film Festival 2025. The film also received nominations for Best Child Actor and Best Film, marking a significant milestone in Aquino’s creative journey.

“This is not just a win for me but for the entire team behind the film,” Aquino expressed. “It proves that with passion and hard work, anything is possible.”

Not one to rest on his laurels, Aquino is now venturing into the music industry. Drawing inspiration from global icons like Beyoncé, Eminem, and Justin Timberlake, he aims to form music groups across various genres, reminiscent of Westlife, Spice Girls, and S Club 7 and Steps. His vision is clear: “I’m looking for extraordinary vocal talent—voices like Mariah Carey or Josh Groban—that can create timeless music for generations.”

Aquino’s long-term goal is to launch his own talent search and eventually a TV network in the Middle East, further cementing his influence in the region. “I want to discover the next global superstar and create a platform for unmatched talent,” he added.

Turning adversity into fuel

Aquino’s success is deeply rooted in overcoming personal struggles. Facing bullying and discrimination in his youth, he turned those challenges into motivation. “I’ve faced many hardships along the way, but I never allowed them to define me,” Aquino said. “Instead, I used those painful experiences as stepping stones to achieve everything I’ve dreamed of.”

His drive to succeed is also evident in his family life. A proud father to two sons, Sheikh and Hamdan—both named after Dubai’s Crown Prince—Aquino draws strength from his family while forging ahead with his career. He also has a twin sister named Cory, and they were named after the former Philippine President, Cory Aquino.

This year, Aquino is launching three new companies, including a major venture in Infanta, Quezon, where he acquired a 2-hectare beachfront property to develop the Aquino Plotado Hotel & Resort. “This project is a dream come true, and I can’t wait to share it with the world,” Aquino revealed.

Through every endeavor, Aquino carries a message of optimism and determination: “Be yourself, work hard for your dreams, always be optimistic, follow your passion in life, and always do the right thing.”
