How a former delivery man became a top learning support assistant in the UAE

Choosing the right path in life isn’t always about knowing what lies ahead—it’s often about taking one step at a time with purpose, grit, and faith. For 37-year-old Aaron Cercado, each humble job, every hardship, and all the quiet wins led him to a calling that would change not only his life but also the lives of the children he now helps thrive every single day.

Aaron, currently working as an Inclusion Assistant at Al Rabeeh School in Abu Dhabi, is one of the many Filipinos who left home in search of a better life. But beyond his goal of financial stability, Aaron found meaning in service, compassion, and education.

A career built on compassion

Aaron started working abroad nine years ago, but his journey was far from glamorous at the beginning. “My first job was as a delivery man in the food industry, bringing goods to sari-sari stores,” he recalled to TGFM. He later took roles such as cake packer at Goldilocks plantation and Medical Services Assistant in a health maintenance organization in Iloilo. These early jobs gave him firsthand experience in responsibility and care.

Later, in Saudi Arabia, he worked as a salesman and cashier for a large fashion retailer, sharpening his communication and customer service skills. However, it was his move to the UAE and his work at a rehabilitation center for Children with Determination that opened his heart to his true passion.

“I discovered a genuine passion for teaching and working with individuals who require additional support,” Aaron shared. “Witnessing the progress and resilience of my students greatly inspired me.”

That inspiration fueled his decision to pursue formal education once more. In January of this year, he completed his Diploma in Teaching at West Visayas State University, with plans to graduate on June 11. His ultimate goal? To become a licensed professional teacher and continue empowering students with special educational needs.

His work at Al Rabeeh School since 2020 has brought him deep fulfillment. “I work closely with children who have special educational needs, helping them access the curriculum in a way that meets their unique needs,” he said. He provides both one-on-one and small group support, adapting learning materials and encouraging independence.

The effort has not gone unnoticed. In 2023, he was recognized in Okada, Manila, with the Asia’s Most Remarkable and Passionate International Educator award at Asia’s Pinnacle Awards. Just a year later, he was honored as one of the top Learning Support Assistants in the UAE during the National Inclusive Practice Award held at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

“I was overwhelmed with gratitude. It was a moment that reminded me why I started this journey,” he said.

A journey rooted in sacrifice and faith

Aaron’s move abroad was driven by familiar motivations. “Like every other Filipino, we aspire to elevate the standard of our lives,” he said. “Working abroad is one variable means to achieve this objective.”

But settling overseas was not easy. He candidly recalls moments of doubt and financial strain. “There are times when we may feel tempted to give up, thinking, ‘Mabuti pa ang mga tambay sa Pilipinas, kaya nilang bumili ng mga gusto nila, samantalang ako kahit isang pirasong underwear pag-iisipan pang pagbilhin.’”

Despite those moments, he found strength in prayer and family. “I place my trust in the Lord. Prayer is powerful, but faith is more significant,” Aaron explained. His wife and children have remained his strongest pillars. “They are both my weakness and my strength.”

In the UAE, Aaron has found not just stability but belonging. “There is indeed no place like home; however, the UAE has become our second home over the past decade,” he said. “The work-life balance here is exceptional, and the cultural diversity makes it easy to celebrate my roots while learning to respect others.”

He also cited the country’s safety and benefits—like affordable transportation and comprehensive insurance—as key factors in making his family’s life more secure.

Looking forward with purpose

Aaron’s aspirations don’t end in the classroom. Looking ahead, he envisions himself returning to the Philippines to serve as a public school teacher, particularly in remote areas. “I want to teach indigenous learners and children with special educational needs. This is how I want to give back to society,” he said.

His long-term goal is driven by his strong desire to make a difference in underserved communities. “My ambition of educating students in remote areas is a commitment I carry deeply,” he affirmed. “Through dedication and perseverance, I hope to create a meaningful impact.”

In offering advice to fellow OFWs, Aaron shares a powerful message rooted in three values: Aspire, Acquire, and Achieve. “Aspire to become what you want in life. Acquire experience and knowledge. Achieve your dreams by working with a heart,” he said. “Dedication and passion are essential ingredients to realizing your aspirations.”

Aaron’s life is a moving narrative of resilience and renewal. It’s a reminder that no job is ever too small if it brings you closer to your purpose. That even the seemingly ordinary moments—packing cakes, assisting patients, supporting children—can be building blocks to an extraordinary journey.

And as he continues to walk his path with compassion and purpose, Aaron remains grounded in one core belief: “Always place God first. Seeking divine guidance strengthens your resolve and gives direction in all aspects of life.”
