How a Filipino nurse is raising the bar for excellence in Saudi Arabia’s healthcare system

Working as a nurse overseas brings unique challenges and opportunities, requiring resilience, adaptability, and a commitment to patient care at an international level. Among those who have successfully navigated this path is Erwin Garcia Bolante, MAN, RN, CHRMO, CHQO. At 38, he currently serves as the Nursing Excellence Manager at King Fahad Armed Forces Hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. He moved from Roxas City, Philippines, to a leadership role at one of Saudi Arabia’s top military hospitals, driven by his dedication to nursing education and patient safety.

Erwin’s academic foundation is solid, starting with a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from St. Anthony College of Roxas City, Inc., completed in 2007, where he was honored with a Clinical Efficiency Award. His academic pursuits didn’t stop there. He earned a Master of Arts in Nursing, majoring in Nursing Service Administration, from St. Paul University Philippines in 2021.

After passing the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties-Nurse examination in 2014, Erwin began his overseas career as an ER Staff Nurse at King Fahad Armed Forces Hospital. Within three years, his dedication earned him the role of Acting Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS).

“I served as a resource nurse and specialized in quality nursing,” he shares in an interview with The Global Filipino Magazine. His leadership qualities led to further promotions, including his current position, where he co-leads with senior leaders to promote nursing quality, patient safety, and performance improvement.

Erwin’s work revolves around preparing the hospital’s nursing department for Magnet Accreditation, an international recognition for nursing excellence. He also maintains staffing plans, collaborates on strategic and operational planning, and ensures compliance with both national and international accreditation standards. “I empower nurses by equipping them with the skills and knowledge they need to excel,” says Erwin, highlighting his passion for nurturing the next generation of nurses.

Pursuing a global career

The decision to work abroad wasn’t taken lightly. “Nurses are in demand abroad, and I wanted to earn a higher salary to support my family,” Erwin explains. His motivation also included saving for the future and providing for his nieces and nephews’ education. The opportunity to gain international exposure and further hone his skills was another driving factor.

Before moving to Saudi Arabia, Erwin gained valuable experience in the Philippines. He worked as a Staff Nurse in the General Wards at St. Anthony College of Roxas City, where his exceptional performance earned him a promotion to Charge Nurse in the Emergency Unit. At just 24 years old, Erwin became the youngest Charge Nurse in the hospital’s history, a testament to his capability and leadership potential.

For Erwin, nursing is more than just a profession—it’s a calling.

“Nursing demands compassion, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to patient care,” he reflects. The most satisfying aspect of his job is mentoring new and experienced nurses alike, helping them enhance their clinical expertise and performance.

“It’s my mission to ensure that every nurse who steps into the field carries not just clinical skills but a profound sense of empathy,” he adds.

His work abroad has given him opportunities to grow both personally and professionally. From attending international seminars to collaborating with the Joint Commission International (JCI) surveyors, Erwin has gained knowledge and experience that many only dream of. “Working abroad makes you a stronger individual, allowing you to explore your knowledge and skills on a global scale,” he says.

Overcoming Challenges and future aspirations

Erwin’s journey to his current position wasn’t without challenges. Being the first Filipino to reach such a high managerial role at his hospital, he faced cultural differences and the pressure to excel. “I spent extra hours studying policies and procedures to be a resource person for the clinical staff nurses,” he recalls. His support system, including a former Director of Nursing who believed in his potential, was crucial in helping him navigate these challenges.

Looking ahead, Erwin hopes to continue his journey in nursing leadership, whether in the Philippines or elsewhere. “I aspire to become a Director of Nursing and share my expertise with my home country,” he says. His advocacy is clear: he aims to empower Filipino nurses to become competitive not only locally but internationally. His vision for the future is to instill compassion, respect, and resilience in nurses, ultimately improving patient outcomes.

To his fellow kababayans working abroad, Erwin offers practical advice. “Balance your work and personal life,” he says, emphasizing the importance of relaxation and socialization to avoid burnout. He also stresses the value of maintaining strong connections with family and friends, even from afar, and finding purpose in their work abroad.
