How a Filipino expatriate in Dubai went from waiter to sales manager

Julius Badato’s story epitomizes resilience, determination, and the pursuit of a better life. At 38 years old, he currently serves as a Sales Manager (Corporate) at DusitD2 Kenz Hotel in Dubai, UAE, a role he has held for nearly five months. His journey from being a waiter/order taker at Crowne Plaza Dubai SZR to his current position reflects his unwavering spirit and dedication to personal and professional growth.

Julius’ venture abroad commenced in 2008 when he made the bold decision to leave his home country, the Philippines, in search of opportunities beyond his borders.

He recalls his initial struggles, stating, “At first, it was tough. It took me two months to secure a job, and I was solely focused on obtaining a working/residence visa.”

Despite the challenges, he persevered, driven by his family’s encouragement and the belief that venturing abroad could lead to transformative experiences.

Reflecting on his journey, Julius credits his cousin and his mother for inspiring him to take the leap.

“I was influenced by my cousin, James Francis Julius, who migrated to Australia. My mom actually encouraged me to try, saying, ‘Maybe it will be life-changing to discover abroad.'”

His career trajectory showcases his willingness to embrace new challenges and roles. After starting in the food and beverage industry, Julius sought opportunities for growth, transitioning to the Sales Department through cross-training and dedication. He ascended through the ranks, eventually securing the position of Sales Coordinator before becoming a Sales Manager.

What motivates Julius in his current role is the challenge it presents.

“My current work is challenging as I have monthly targets that need to be achieved. I am enjoying my role as I meet new people and connect with different nationalities, including global companies.”

For Julius, the allure of working overseas lies in diversity and opportunity. “You’ll learn and appreciate what they do or their practices,” he shares.

“Dubai is the best city to work and see yourself growing, especially for a career. There are numerous opportunities; you just need to connect with the right people.”

However, the journey wasn’t without its struggles. Julius admits to battling homesickness during his first two years abroad. Yet, he found strength in his sense of purpose as the eldest in his family.

“I need to be tough as they look up to me. I need to be the Alpha Male in the family,” he emphasizes.

Looking ahead, Julius envisions returning home eventually, equipped with valuable experiences and investments.

“I want to work until I have a few investments before settling down. Probably learn new things to start up something and be prepared.”
