House prosecutors seek subpoena for VP Duterte’s bank records in impeachment trial

Lawmakers serving as prosecutors in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte are considering asking the Senate Impeachment Court to issue subpoenas for her financial records, Manila 3rd District Rep. Joel Chua confirmed on Monday.

Chua, a member of the House prosecution panel, stated that they are “exploring legal options” to obtain banking documents that could support specific charges in the impeachment complaint. He emphasized in an Inquirer.net report that the impeachment process allows them to gather necessary evidence, including financial records, through legal means.

“The Bank Secrecy Law has provisions that allow access to financial records in impeachment cases, and we will utilize all available legal avenues to obtain relevant documents that will aid the trial,” Chua said.

Meanwhile, Senate President Francis Escudero announced that the impeachment trial will begin after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA) on July 21.

Despite Congress being on recess, Chua assured that the prosecution team will continue preparing for the trial. “We will ensure that by the time proceedings start, we have the necessary documents, testimonies, and financial records to present,” he added.
