A key official in the House of Representatives has clarified that the impeachment complaints against Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio are still in motion and not stalled, contrary to speculation.
House Secretary General Reginald Velasco stated on Monday that he was waiting for a possible fourth impeachment complaint before forwarding the three existing cases to Speaker Martin Romualdez. He mentioned that while a group had expressed intentions to file an additional complaint, no formal submission had been received yet.
“They’re still looking for endorsers,” Velasco said in a News5 report, explaining that if 103 or more lawmakers back the complaint, it could bypass standard procedures and go directly to the plenary and Senate.
The impeachment cases against Duterte-Carpio primarily revolve around allegations of misusing over P610 million in confidential funds. Progressive groups recently staged a protest urging President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to push for the House to act on the cases.
Last November, Marcos dismissed the impeachment efforts as a waste of government resources, calling them unnecessary. Despite the House adjourning its session last Friday and set to reconvene after the May elections, Velasco affirmed that the impeachment process remains possible, though it typically takes at least 130 days.
