House leaders slam VP Sara Duterte’s Supreme Court petition as ‘desperate move’

Several House leaders have criticized Vice President Sara Duterte’s move to seek Supreme Court intervention in stopping the impeachment process against her, calling it a “desperate move” to evade scrutiny.

House Senior Deputy Speaker Aurelio Gonzales Jr. stressed that impeachment falls solely under Congress’ jurisdiction, as outlined in the Constitution.

“The Constitution is clear: impeachment is the sole prerogative of Congress. They are afraid, which is why they want to stop the process. It seems the corruption allegations have weight, especially with the scrutiny of bank records,” Gonzales stated.

House Deputy Speaker David Suarez dismissed Duterte’s petition as “legal theatrics,” arguing that it only raises more doubts about her innocence.

“If she truly believes she is innocent, she should face the charges head-on instead of running to the courts for protection. This attempt to short-circuit the process only raises more questions about what she is trying to hide,” Suarez said.
