Key members of the House of Representatives have denied claims that the chamber is preparing an impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte. However, one lawmaker acknowledged that it wouldn’t be surprising if certain groups or individuals eventually filed a complaint.
In a press conference on Monday, House Assistant Majority Leader Rep. Francisco Paolo Ortega V (La Union), Rep. Jil Bongalon (Ako Bicol), and Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong (Lanao del Sur) refuted allegations made by former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque that the House was gearing up for impeachment proceedings against Duterte.
Ortega quipped that Roque’s “crystal ball” needed “cleaning,” as there has been no discussion of such a move in the House. Bongalon echoed Ortega’s sentiments but mentioned that it wouldn’t be shocking if someone filed an impeachment case to hold the vice president accountable. Adiong emphasized the importance of not spreading rumors based on unverified information.
The rumors of impeachment are not new, as similar claims emerged in November 2023 following controversy over Duterte’s use of confidential and intelligence funds. House leaders have consistently dismissed these as “fake news.”
Roque recently posted a video alleging that an impeachment complaint against Duterte would be filed this week, citing information from his “classmates” in the 17th Congress.
