House approves bill extending Barangay and SK officials’ term to six years

The House of Representatives has approved on second reading a bill seeking to extend the term of Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials from three to six years.

House Bill 11287, passed through viva voce voting during Monday’s plenary session, proposes that the extended term commence on June 30, 2029, following synchronized Barangay and SK elections scheduled for the second Monday of May 2029.

Under the measure, no barangay official may serve more than two consecutive terms in the same position, while SK officials will be limited to a single term. The bill, primarily authored by House Speaker Martin Romualdez and other House leaders, also includes a transitory provision allowing Barangay and SK officials elected on October 30, 2023, to remain in office until May 2029 unless removed or suspended for valid reasons.

The Senate had earlier approved Senate Bill 2816, which proposes a four-year term for barangay and SK officials. The Senate bill also limits barangay officials to three consecutive terms in the same position and schedules the next Barangay and SK elections for October 2027, to be held every four years thereafter.
