‘Hindi sapat ang salamat’: BH Party-list seeks better support for OFWs

BAGONG Henerasyon (BH) Party-list is pressing for more decisive government measures to safeguard the rights and welfare of millions of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), stressing that they deserve more than just symbolic praise.

Following a dialogue with Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Assistant Secretary for Sea-based OFW Concerns Jerome Pampolina, BH Rep. Robert Nazal and BH spokesperson and former Rep. Bernadette Herrera vowed to push for stronger policies that protect and empower Filipino workers abroad.

“Our OFWs don’t need grand gestures or hollow praise. What they need and deserve are real solutions, meaningful protection, and support systems they can rely on,” Nazal said. “They’ve given so much to this country. It’s time we give them justice, security and dignity.”

Herrera highlighted the many unresolved challenges OFWs still face. “Napakarami nating dapat tutukan. May mga OFW na may kaso laban sa employer. May iba, matapos ang dekadang pagtitiis sa ibang bansa, ay umuuwing luhaan at walang naipon,” she said, stressing that their vital contribution to the economy should be met with adequate support.

Nazal said BH Party-list will work with the DMW to strengthen legal and financial assistance, expand reintegration programs, and ensure returning OFWs come home protected and empowered. “Our collaboration with the DMW is just the beginning. We will continue to fight for OFWs inside and outside the halls of Congress,” he added.

Herrera also emphasized maintaining an open line with the DMW and other agencies, noting, “Hindi sapat ang ‘salamat’ kung kapalit ay pagdurusa.”

The party-list is now drafting proposals aimed at boosting on-site assistance, addressing post-employment grievances, and improving the reintegration process for returning workers.
