Witness accounts from a quiet neighborhood in Talavera have become central to an investigation into the fatal shooting of a public school teacher, an incident authorities say stemmed from a deeply personal motive. The victim, a 39-year-old high school educator, died from multiple gunshot wounds after being attacked on the evening of November 23.
Police later identified the gunman as a 52-year-old farmer from Barangay Mabuhay, who, according to investigators, developed an unhealthy preoccupation with the victim’s wife. Nueva Ecija Police Director Col. Heryl Bruno said this fixation was key to understanding the attack. “This was not random. The suspect’s fixation on the victim’s wife drove him to commit this act,” he said.
Hours before the shooting, the teacher had been drinking with a colleague in Barangay Poblacion Sur. Investigators said the suspect approached the pair shortly before 8 p.m. and opened fire, striking the victim four times. Responders rushed him to Talavera General Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Talavera police immediately launched Oplan Bakod, collecting CCTV footage from nearby establishments and interviewing those who witnessed the attack. As officers intensified the search, pressure mounted on the suspect, who surrendered at around 1 a.m. on November 24 with the help of his barangay captain and relatives.
Colleagues at Talavera National High School later described the victim as a committed teacher admired by his students. Residents of the town, meanwhile, have voiced concern over the sudden violence, calling for tighter security in the area.
Bruno said the suspect’s decision to surrender underscores the province’s push for accountability as investigators now examine his movements and the nature of the personal obsession that allegedly fueled the killing.
