South Korea faced its second day of heavy snowfall on Thursday, resulting in three deaths and widespread disruptions to transportation, according to authorities.
In Gyeonggi province near Seoul, one person died when a tent-style garage collapsed during snow removal, while another fatality occurred when a golf practice net gave way under the weight of snow. A third death was also reported, highlighting the dangers of the extreme weather.
The severe snowfall led to the cancellation of 156 flights and disrupted 104 ferry services across 79 routes, the interior ministry confirmed. Meanwhile, Seoul experienced its heaviest November snowfall since records began more than a century ago, with some areas accumulating up to 40 centimeters of snow by Thursday morning.
Snow removal operations were in full force, with 11,000 personnel and 20,000 pieces of equipment deployed in the capital. Despite the efforts, temporary power outages affected 131 locations, though nearly half were resolved by late Wednesday.
Although the heavy snow advisory in Seoul was lifted, it remained active in southern regions where snowfall continued at a rate of approximately one centimeter per hour, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration.
