Two Emiratis were among four hikers who tragically died after being swept away by a sudden flash flood in Oman. The victims were navigating a narrow valley in Wadi Tanuf in Nizwa when heavy rains hit, according to reports from Al Khaleej.
The Royal Oman Police confirmed on social media platform X that the incident claimed the lives of three individuals from Arab countries, including two Emiratis, Khalid Al Mansouri and Salem Al Jarraf, as well as an Omani national. One additional hiker sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Nizwa Reference Hospital.
Al Mansouri, a former UAE handball player and javelin champion, and Al Jarraf, known for his love of adventure sports, were prominent figures in their communities. Funeral prayers were held for them in Abu Dhabi and Ras Al Khaimah after their bodies were repatriated from Oman.
Rescue efforts led by Omani authorities and local citizens recovered the bodies of the four deceased and transported four other injured hikers to the hospital, with conditions ranging from moderate to critical.
An eyewitness described encountering the group leader, Hussam Al Ameri, and warning him of the worsening weather and rising water. Despite efforts to alert the remaining hikers, the valley became increasingly dangerous as rain continued into the evening. The witness eventually managed to report the situation to authorities, who swiftly responded to the emergency.
Wadi Qasha, part of the Wadi Al-Hijri area where the tragedy unfolded, is known for its challenging terrain, including deep ravines and narrow paths that can become perilous, especially during heavy rains.
