HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, will end after four seasons, according to showrunner Ryan Condal. This announcement was made during a press conference on August 5.
When asked about the possibility of a fifth season, Condal stated, “No, I think it’s four.” He emphasized that the series’ timeline, based on George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, is already planned out.
Production for the third season is scheduled to begin in early 2025. However, there is no confirmation yet on the number of episodes, although season 2 will feature eight episodes.
Discussing the show’s progression, Condal mentioned that the dramatic storytelling pace set in season 2 will likely continue. He also addressed the cliffhanger ending of season 2, which sets up the Battle of the Gullet, a major event from Fire & Blood. Condal highlighted the extensive resources needed to bring such significant events to life, including construction, costumes, and visual effects.
George R.R. Martin had previously noted that the story of Rhaenyra, Aegon II, and the Dance of the Dragons would require four full seasons of 10 episodes each to be fully realized.
House of the Dragon follows the success of Game of Thrones, which aired for eight seasons from 2011 to 2019. Another prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is slated for release in 2025, focusing on the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and Aegon “Egg” Targaryen.
