Hamas on Saturday confirmed the death of its Gaza military commander Mohammad Sinwar, months after Israel claimed he was killed in a May strike.
In a statement, the group shared photographs of Sinwar with other leaders, calling them “martyrs,” but gave no further details about the circumstances of his death.
Sinwar was the younger brother of Yahya Sinwar, the movement’s top leader and one of the masterminds behind the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel. Yahya was killed a year later in combat, and Mohammad rose in rank shortly after his brother’s death.
With his death now officially acknowledged, leadership of Hamas’ armed wing across Gaza is expected to consolidate under Izz al-Din Haddad, a close associate who currently directs operations in the enclave’s north.
