Filipino-British gymnast Jake Jarman gained recognition in the Philippines as he competed alongside Carlos Yulo in the gymnastics events of the 2024 Paris Olympics. Representing Great Britain, Jarman secured a bronze medal in the floor finals, while Yulo clinched two gold medals in the floor exercise and vault finals.
“Double Olympic champion in one Olympics as well, I don’t know how many people have ever done that before. I’m super proud,” Jarman commented on Yulo’s achievement in an interview with members of the Philippine Olympic Committee media, including GMA Integrated News’ JP Soriano.
Jarman shared that he and Yulo trained together months before the Olympics and expressed his happiness for Yulo’s accomplishments. “He was struggling with vault a little bit. It’s really lovely to see that he has gone from a place where he was struggling with it to be an Olympic champion,” Jarman added.
Tracing his roots to Cebu, where his mother is from, Jarman also spent part of his childhood there. When asked about the possibility of competing for the Philippines, Jarman said it would be ‘amazing,’ but he plans to stay with Team GB for the next Olympic cycle.
“For me, competing for the Philippines, it would be amazing, but at the moment, it’s hard for me to make a decision like that,” he said. “I definitely would not be closing any doors but I think for the next four years, I’ll still be definitely with UK.”
Jarman expressed his gratitude for the support he received from the Philippines during his Olympic journey. “I just want to say thank you. To have the support I’m seeing online from the other side of the world is mind-blowing to me. I never thought I’d be in a position like this. I just want to say thank you, it means the world to me.”
