Gunfight over runaway couple ends in surprise wedding in Maguindanao

A volatile standoff between two armed groups in Mamasapano, Maguindanao del Sur, ended not with casualties—but with a wedding.

What triggered the tension was the elopement of a 15-year-old girl and her 21-year-old boyfriend, an act that sparked a gun battle between the girl’s father, a member of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), and the young man’s family.

According to an Inquirer.net report, citing the Philippine Army spokesperson Lt. Col. Roden Orbon, the father—Sukor Guiamalon of the MILF’s 106th Base Command—led an armed group that clashed with the camp of Barangay Sapakan chair Mohamad Tatak, whose brother had eloped with Guiamalon’s daughter.

The firefight erupted midday Friday in Sitio Szopad and raged for hours before officers from the 33rd Infantry Battalion stepped in. By 3 p.m., military officials had calmed both sides and brokered a peaceful resolution.

Instead of escalating the violence, the two families chose a different path: they agreed to formalize the union of the young couple. A wedding was held the very next day, with Mamasapano Mayor Datu Akmad Ampatuan serving as principal sponsor.
