Groups urge swift action on impeachment complaints against VP Sara Duterte

Two political groups, Makabayan and Akbayan, have welcomed the third impeachment complaint filed against Vice President Sara Duterte, urging the House of Representatives to act promptly on all three cases. The latest complaint, submitted by a group of clergy and lawyers, accuses Duterte of irregularities in the use of over ₱600 million in confidential funds.

Makabayan bloc representatives France Castro, Arlene Brosas, and Raoul Manuel emphasized in a PhilStar report that the third complaint strengthens calls for accountability over the alleged misuse of public funds. Castro described the three complaints as evidence of the severity of the issue, stating, “We can no longer allow this kind of grave abuse of public funds to pass.”

Brosas called on House Speaker Martin Romualdez to expedite the process, stressing the urgency of addressing the allegations. “Each day of inaction is another day of impunity,” she said, adding that it is the House’s constitutional duty to move the case forward to the Senate for trial.

Manuel highlighted serious accusations against Duterte, including the use of fictitious names on receipts, failure to provide documentary evidence, and alleged concealment of intelligence activities. “These are systematic corruption and betrayal of public trust, not mere technical violations,” he stated.

The Akbayan group echoed similar sentiments, commending the public for their efforts to hold Duterte accountable. They also encouraged other groups to join in pursuing legal actions against the vice president.

The third complaint, endorsed by several clergy members and civic leaders, was officially received by the House on Thursday.
