A Jordanian man called off his marriage proposal after clashing with his fiancée’s father over what he considered extreme pre-wedding requirements—including a six-month salary statement and a police clearance certificate.
The incident unfolded in Amman and has since triggered heated discussions in local media and online platforms, reflecting growing frustrations among Jordan’s youth regarding the financial burdens of marriage.
The groom-to-be reportedly grew upset when his future father-in-law asked for documents typically reserved for job or loan applications. According to Saraya News, the man questioned the request, asking the father, “Am I applying for a loan from a bank?”
What started as a hopeful step toward marriage quickly unraveled. The conversation turned into a verbal argument, and the man ultimately decided to walk away from the engagement.
The situation has resonated with many across Jordan, especially amid economic challenges that have made starting a family increasingly difficult. With youth unemployment remaining high and cost-of-living pressures growing, the demands placed on young couples are becoming a serious obstacle to marriage.
