A groom removed his best man from his wedding for proposing to his girlfriend during the reception, overshadowing the couple’s special day.
Sharing his experience on Reddit’s Am I the A*hle (AITA) forum, the 30-year-old groom recounted how his friend John disrupted what was meant to be a perfect celebration. “The ceremony was beautiful, and the reception was even better. Everything was going smoothly until the speeches,” the groom wrote.
John’s speech started off with jokes and heartfelt stories but took an unexpected turn when he proposed to his girlfriend in the middle of the reception. “I felt like my special day had been hijacked. Instead of celebrating our marriage, everyone was now focused on John and his fiancée,” the groom shared.
Feeling that his day had been overshadowed, the groom confronted John and told him he was out of line. Despite John’s belief that his proposal would be a pleasant surprise, the groom deemed it selfish and inconsiderate, ultimately asking John to leave the event.
While some friends believed the groom overreacted, his wife fully supported his decision. However, the groom later questioned if he had been too harsh. Reddit users mostly sided with the groom, affirming his right to be upset but also suggesting he consider forgiving John for the sake of their long-standing friendship.
“You have every right to be mad, but now it’s your obligation to forgive. Not sweep things under the rug like nothing happened but to choose to forgive John and set what he did aside for the sake of the years you’ve been friends,” one user commented.
