Leading grocery chain, Choithrams, has broken new ground in workplace inclusivity by launching the UAE’s first entirely women-run supermarket.
Located at Marina Wharf 2 in Dubai, the store opened its doors on July 19 and serves as a major milestone for both the brand and the country.
The 5,200 sq ft supermarket is managed solely by female staff, occupying all roles from stocking shelves to cash handling and store management.
Rehana Raj, Head of Retail Operations in the UAE at Choithrams, said, “This initiative aligns with the UAE’s roadmap for gender diversity. Choithrams is committed to empowering women by offering them equal opportunities in hiring, training, appraisal, rewards, and promotions.”
Rajiv Warrier, CEO at Choithrams GCC, echoed Raj’s sentiments, stating, “We are always asking what more we can do to support a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workforce. Women leaders in our organization have been exceptional, and we aim to increase their representation in decision-making roles. This store is the first of many women-led initiatives to come.”
In addition to its regular offerings, the new store features a range of niche women’s products unavailable in other supermarkets. The store will operate 24/7 and offers free home delivery services.
This initiative is part of Choithrams’ broader efforts to promote workplace diversity and gender equality.
The company has set an ambitious goal to have at least 20% of its managerial roles filled by women by 2024.
Natasha Ghosh, Marketing Manager at Choithrams GCC, added, “This is a testament to our commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse workplace culture.”
