Gov’t agencies team up to help OFWs manage money, avoid scams

A courtesy meeting between the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas has laid the groundwork for a broader inter-agency push to bolster financial protections for Filipino migrant workers, particularly those holding active OWWA memberships.

Central to the discussions was a proposed supplemental agreement among OWWA, the Department of Migrant Workers, and the BSP. The agreement aims to deepen financial literacy initiatives, sharpen efforts against scams targeting OFWs, and expand reintegration support for long-serving migrants who are looking to settle and invest back home in the Philippines.

OWWA Deputy Administrator Ryan Vincent Uy joined Administrator Patricia Yvonne “PY” Caunan at the meeting, along with DMW Assistant Secretary Francis Ron De Guzman and NRCO Director Andrea Luisa Anolin.

Officials stressed that sound financial preparation for OFWs must extend beyond crisis situations, encompassing the long-term security and economic advancement of workers both during and after their time abroad.

The proposed supplemental agreement, if finalized, would bind three government bodies to a shared framework of financial education and worker support — covering the arc from active deployment overseas through to permanent resettlement in the country.
