UAE authorities have declared a one-day paid holiday for government employees in observance of Islamic New Year. The Federal Authority for Government Human Resources confirmed that Muharram 1, the first day of the Islamic calendar, will be a holiday. Based on moon-sighting, this day is expected to fall on July 7 in the Gregorian calendar.
The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (Mohre) also announced that the private sector will observe the holiday on July 7.
Following the Hijri New Year, UAE residents can look forward to another holiday marking the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) birthday, as outlined in the country’s 2024 public holiday calendar. The final official holiday of the year will coincide with National Day, offering a long weekend.
Employees in the UAE are entitled to these public holidays in addition to 30 annual leave days.
Similarly, Oman has declared a holiday for the Hijri New Year on July 7 for both public and private sector workers, resulting in a long weekend for many employees.
