Got plants at home? Your backyard could win you a share of AED 300,000 in Dubai

A home garden in Dubai could soon be worth more than fresh air and pretty leaves. Residents across the emirate are being invited to turn their backyards and balconies into eco-friendly green sanctuaries, with a chance to win part of an AED 300,000 prize pool in Dubai Municipality’s latest sustainable gardening competition.

Now in its third year, The Most Beautiful Sustainable Home Garden in Dubai celebrates households that combine creativity, sustainability, and modern landscaping to boost the city’s green footprint. The initiative forms part of the UAE’s Year of the Community and supports Dubai’s broader plan to grow into one of the world’s most liveable and environmentally forward cities under the Dubai Urban Master Plan 2040.

The municipality will offer workshops, digital guidance, and awareness programs to help participants build climate-smart gardens that conserve water and energy, encourage biodiversity, and use technology to support plant health. The competition welcomes all types of home landscapes, from compact balconies to spacious villas, as long as they blend beauty with sustainability.

“This competition reflects our commitment to enhancing Dubai’s urban landscape and developing the agriculture sector. We do not just plant trees; we foster awareness and environmental responsibility across every neighbourhood,” said Muhammad Abdul Rahman Al-Awadi, Director of the Agriculture Department at Dubai Municipality. “We encourage residents to adopt sustainable agricultural solutions that expand green spaces. Every well-designed, sustainable home garden contributes to the city’s identity and appeal, helping make Dubai a leading global city in quality of life and sustainability.”

Applications take around 15 minutes and require photo submissions. Entries close on December 21, 2025, followed by site visits early next year. Winners will be announced in March 2026.

A judging committee will score gardens based on criteria such as water-saving features, use of native plants, soil quality, waste and energy management, safety, innovation, and how well the garden improves the surrounding microclimate.

Dubai has sharpened its focus on greener living in recent years. Over the past year alone, authorities have held 150 environmental awareness workshops and events to encourage residents to adopt sustainable habits and help shape a more nature-rich city.

Residents interested in joining the competition can submit their entries now.
