Gilas Pilipinas bows out of Fiba Asia Cup after heavy loss to Australia

Gilas Pilipinas’ run in the 2025 Fiba Asia Cup came to a halt after absorbing an 84-60 defeat at the hands of powerhouse Australia in the quarterfinals on Wednesday at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Inquirer.net reported.

The Boomers wasted no time asserting control, draining seven of their first 11 three-point attempts to race to a 29-12 lead in the opening quarter — a gap the Filipinos never managed to close. By halftime, the Australians were up 48-28 and would stretch their advantage to as many as 26 in the second half.

Jaylin Galloway and Owen Foxwell fired 15 points apiece, while Xavier Cooks added 10 points, seven rebounds, and two assists, leading Australia to its 16th consecutive victory in the continental tournament since debuting in 2017.

Kevin Quiambao was among the few bright spots for Gilas, finishing with 17 points built on five triples. Dwight Ramos contributed 15 points and seven boards, but Justin Brownlee, the hero in the overtime win against Saudi Arabia, was limited to just 10 points.

Coach Tim Cone’s squad ends its campaign on a mixed note — highlighted by hard-fought wins but ultimately undone by Australia’s hot shooting and relentless pressure.
