Get shopping rewards by using UAE’s new smart recycling bins

A UAE-based tech company, Nadeera, is transforming the way cities handle recyclable waste. Addressing the often-asked question about the destination of recyclables, Nadeera has introduced a fleet of smart bins in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, equipped with cutting-edge technology to streamline waste segregation and recycling.

Over 50 of these innovative bins have been installed across various communities, including JLT, JVC, Marina, and Dubai South. These bins are not your average waste containers. As Rabih El Chaar, the founder and CEO of Nadeera, told Khaleej Times, these bins are embedded with chips that prevent the disposal of non-recyclable trash, thus ensuring only recyclable materials are collected.

The smart bins also feature sensors to notify the company when they are full, optimizing the collection process. “Waste management is fundamentally a logistics business,” El Chaar said, emphasizing the importance of efficiency in recycling operations.

But Nadeera’s approach isn’t just about smart bins; it’s also about rewarding responsible behavior. The company has introduced an app that incentivizes recycling. Users deposit their recyclables in traceable bags equipped with QR codes. Once collected, the bags are scanned, and based on the quality of sorting, users receive feedback and credits redeemable at various outlets like Carrefour or Talabat.

El Chaar highlighted the interactive aspect of their app, which provides feedback and reminders to users, ensuring continuous engagement in recycling efforts.

Driving this innovative system is a combination of artificial intelligence and blockchain technology. Every transaction is recorded on a blockchain, providing transparency and assurance that the waste is indeed being diverted from landfills.

A testament to Nadeera’s effectiveness was seen during COP28, held from November 30 to December 12 in Dubai. The event was noted as the most sustainable COP ever, partly due to Nadeera’s efforts. In the first 10 days, over 10 tonnes of recyclables were collected from the site. El Chaar pointed out the significant impact of recycling on reducing CO2 emissions, highlighting its role in combating global warming.
