Gaza doctor who lost nine children in airstrike dies from injuries, leaving only one son behind

A Palestinian doctor who lost nearly his entire family in a devastating Israeli airstrike has succumbed to his wounds, health officials in Gaza confirmed.

According to a Reuters report, Dr. Hamdi Al Najjar died days after being critically injured in a May 24 airstrike that leveled his home in Khan Younis, southern Gaza. The attack claimed the lives of nine of his children, leaving only his 11-year-old son, Adam, as the lone survivor.

His wife, Dr. Alaa Al Najjar, a pediatrician, was on duty at the Nasser Medical Complex when the bodies of her children were brought in. She had to identify their remains—burnt and lifeless—as a mother and physician.

On Sunday, dozens of mourners gathered for Dr. Al Najjar’s funeral, another grim reminder of the relentless toll the war continues to take on Gaza’s civilian population.

The Israeli military confirmed conducting an airstrike in Khan Younis on the same day of the bombing. Since the start of the conflict, more than 54,000 Palestinians have been killed, with countless others wounded or displaced. Much of Gaza now lies in ruins, forcing the population to seek refuge in overcrowded shelters and temporary camps.
