Gatchalian seeks fuel subsidies as Dubai crude nears $80 per barrel

As global crude prices inch closer to the USD80 per barrel mark, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian on Friday called on the government to activate fuel subsidy programs to protect sectors most vulnerable to fuel hikes.

Gatchalian cited recent figures showing that the average price of Dubai crude hit USD74.04 per barrel from June 16 to 18, largely influenced by the ongoing tensions between Israel and Iran. He warned that a further surge could severely affect transportation and agriculture sectors if the government fails to act swiftly.

“These subsidies are crucial as oil prices continue to climb,” Gatchalian said in a statement.

Under the 2025 national budget, PHP2.5 billion is earmarked for the Department of Transportation to assist public utility drivers, including those in taxis, tricycles, ride-hailing platforms, and delivery services. Meanwhile, PHP150 million is allotted to the Department of Agriculture to aid farmers and fisherfolk.

Gatchalian emphasized the urgency of releasing the assistance, saying the government must act fast to minimize the impact of global fuel shocks on Filipinos’ daily lives.
