From trekking muddy fields in the Philippines to establishing a yacht charter business in the UAE

“Failure cannot prevail when your determination to succeed is strong.” Rommel Villanueva Tuscano lives by these words, and his story is a shining example of the resilience of the Filipino spirit.

From trekking muddy fields in worn-out rubber slippers to making significant strides in the UAE’s vibrant tourism sector, Rommel’s journey inspires many.

Born in the Philippines, Rommel’s early life was marred by financial struggles. Wearing handed-down clothes, walking long distances to school, and, as he recounts, “riding hanging on the edge of a bus just so I could ride for free” during his university years, Rommel faced hardships that would break many.

Yet, his tenacity, coupled with unwavering support from his family, saw him through.

A leap of faith

Driven by the desire for a better life and new experiences, Rommel took the brave step of venturing abroad.

“I wanted to gain diverse experiences and skills by immersing myself in different cultures and work environments,” he shared with The Global Filipino Magazine.

He landed in the UAE in 2002, enduring the scorching summer heat and, at one low point, sleeping under a tree due to a lack of funds.

But Rommel’s luck changed when he secured a position as a doorman at the One and Only Royal Mirage in Jumeirah.

“Being a doorman helped me become more confident in talking to people and navigating the challenges in meeting everyone’s individual needs,” he said.

This role proved invaluable as he learned the ropes of the hospitality industry and expanded his professional network.

Rommel’s career trajectory in the UAE is nothing short of remarkable. Having worked in a myriad of roles – from concierge positions to sales and marketing gigs – he found his true passion in creating memorable experiences for tourists.

In 2020, during the global pandemic’s peak, he founded Sand Air Water Adventures LLC. The company thrives today, supporting Dubai Tourism’s initiatives by offering unique experiences such as private yacht charters at the Dubai Marina.

A vision for the future

While Rommel has achieved impressive success abroad, his heart remains in the Philippines.

“When the right time comes, my plan is to go back to the Philippines. There is definitely no place like home,” he said.

He envisions setting up a business with his wife, providing employment opportunities for fellow Filipinos.

For fellow Filipinos striving to make a mark overseas, Rommel offers sage advice: “When you feel homesick or sad, seek emotional support… prioritize your needs over wants and try to explore additional income sources. Take it easy but persevere.”
