From skylines to sand dunes: An OFW’s voyage of self-discovery and professional flourishing

From the bustling markets of Hong Kong to the luxurious landscapes of Dubai, Mherck Dela Cruz’s journey epitomizes resilience, passion, and a relentless pursuit of personal and professional growth. A seasoned social media manager at ME Dubai by Melia, Mherck shares his experiences, the challenges he overcame, and his aspirations for the future.

Mherck currently spearheads social media strategies at the architectural gem in the heart of the Burj Khalifa district, designed by the late Dame Zaha Hadid.

“ME Dubai is situated in the breath-taking The Opus by Omniyat building, the only hotel project where she has personally designed the interiors and exteriors,” Mherck shared with The Global Filipino Magazine, reflecting on the significance of his workplace.

His role involves crafting engaging content, designing graphics, and managing various aspects of the hotel’s online presence.

“The highlight of my career undoubtedly lies in the realm of creativity,” Mherck confided, adding that enhancing the brand’s online presence through captivating visuals and compelling campaigns has been “immensely fulfilling.”

The OFW’s odyssey began two decades ago, relocating abroad at the tender age of five, only to return to the Philippines to pursue higher education. The pull to return to Hong Kong was irresistible, as it was a place where his life seemed to resonate.

“Interestingly, amidst the challenges posed by the global pandemic, a remarkable opportunity arose for me to relocate once again, this time to Dubai,” Mherck disclosed, viewing it as a chance to embrace a new culture, environment, and professional landscape.

The primary motivation behind this global journey was familial bonds. Mherck expressed, “The prospect of reuniting with my mother, who has been based in Hong Kong even before my birth, was a compelling factor in my choice.”

This desire, however, evolved into a journey of self-discovery, cultural exploration, and professional advancement.

The transition wasn’t without its challenges. Leaving his family in Hong Kong, navigating cultural differences, and establishing trust in a new environment were hurdles Mherck had to overcome.

“The feeling of homesickness was undeniable,” he admitted, relying on the support of friends and family to pull through.

Through determination and a willingness to engage with the local culture, Mherck discovered the warmth and hospitality of Dubai, turning it from an unfamiliar territory into a second home.

Mherck’s diverse professional journey started in finance, transitioned into hospitality, and later delved into public relations and marketing in Hong Kong’s vibrant nightclub scene.

“Interacting with personalities like Ciara, Bruno Mars, Sean Kingston, and many others has been a remarkable highlight,” he reminisced.

Embarking on a journey of creativity and cultural exploration

Mherck’s passion for creativity and digital platforms fueled his decision to venture into social media and marketing.

“It’s not just a job for me; it’s a vocation that ignites my enthusiasm and fuels my drive to excel,” he stated.

The dynamism of the field, the balance between creativity and cultural awareness, and the opportunity for continuous learning keep him invigorated.

Working overseas has been a transformative journey for Mherck. From Hong Kong’s fast-paced lifestyle to Dubai’s commitment to innovation and tradition, each city has enriched his perspective and provided a platform for evolution.

“Both Hong Kong and Dubai are gateways to diverse landscapes, allowing me to venture beyond borders and immerse myself in new cultures, languages, and traditions,” he reflected.

Looking ahead, Mherck aspires to explore various countries and cultures.

“Experiencing different lifestyles, meeting new people, and immersing myself in diverse environments excites me,” he shared.

While he may not have specific advocacies at the moment, contributing positively to the community through various initiatives remains a priority.
