From poverty to success: OFW shares keys to succeed overseas

In a world filled with challenges and uncertainties, Winston Tan Parandas stands tall as a shining example of determination, resilience, and the pursuit of dreams. Leaving behind a life of poverty in the Philippines, Winston embarked on a journey that would span over 16 years abroad, carving a successful career as a Document Controller in the Middle East. His story is one of triumph over adversity and the unwavering belief that dreams can be achieved with hard work, faith, and an unwavering spirit.

Winston’s journey began with humble beginnings. Growing up in a financially disadvantaged family, he faced numerous obstacles on his path to success. Denied the opportunity to pursue higher education due to poverty, Winston’s dreams were not deterred. His talent for writing became his ticket to a brighter future. His achievements in essay writing contests caught the attention of influential figures, leading to a government scholarship recommendation from the late Hon. Raul S. Roco, former Philippine Senator and Secretary of Education. Armed with his determination and the scholarship, Winston enrolled in the University of Saint La Salle in Bacolod City, Philippines, graduating with a degree in Bachelor of Arts major in Interdisciplinary Studies in 2000.

“Do not allow anyone to hinder the realization of your aspired dreams in life. There is no price tag in building and chasing dreams. When you dream for something, dream big since it is free like the open sky,” he told The Global Filipino Magazine.

Winston’s journey abroad commenced in 2006 when he was offered a position as a Project Site Secretary cum Document Controller for the New Doha International Airport project in Qatar. From there, his career flourished, leading him to work on several high-profile projects in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Notable projects include the Hudayriyat Island – Hudayriyat Priority Development Area in Abu Dhabi, the Etihad Rail Stage 2 & 3 project in Dubai, and the Expo 2020 Urban Planning & Public Realm project in Dubai.

“I am the breadwinner in the family. Moreover, I am supporting the college education of my nieces and nephew. I saw working abroad as an opportunity to provide for my family and help secure their future,” he said.

As a Document Controller, Winston plays a crucial role in managing and overseeing the document control management system cycle for various projects. His responsibilities include ensuring the accessibility, traceability, version control, and submission of documents through online software platforms such as Aconex System. Winston’s attention to detail and commitment to excellence have made him an invaluable asset to the project teams he works with.

Winston’s passion for his work is evident in his dedication and commitment to his profession. Beyond providing for his family, he finds fulfillment in assisting his project teams in achieving their goals. He embraces every opportunity to learn and grow, continuously expanding his knowledge and skills in the field of document control. Winston’s work ethic and positive attitude have earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues.

“The most gratifying and fulfilling about my profession is that I’m able to help and assist my project team to achieve both the company and project team’s goals,” Winston said.

Winston’s journey has not been without its fair share of struggles. From the initial low wages to the sacrifices required, he faced numerous challenges along the way.

“I started with a wage of 1,200 Qatari Riyals per month way back 2006, in Doha, State of Qatar. It requires a lot of sacrifices and patience,” the OFW recalled.

However, his unwavering faith, persistence, and unwavering support from his family and loved ones helped him overcome these obstacles. Winston’s ability to adapt and learn from failures and problems has shaped him into the resilient individual he is today.

Winston’s accomplishments extend beyond his professional career. As a believer in paying it forward, he has sponsored the college education of his nieces, nephews, and other deserving students in his community. Winston’s passion for education has opened doors for many young individuals, empowering them to pursue their dreams. His impact as a mentor and benefactor has transformed lives and created a lasting legacy.

To those struggling abroad, Winston offers words of wisdom. He emphasizes the importance of choosing true friends wisely and staying true to one’s core objectives. He encourages fellow Filipinos to remember their reasons for pursuing work abroad, reminding them that their sacrifices serve a greater purpose.

“If you will drift away due to untoward circumstance, pause for a while, recollect, and pray, and go back to your basic core and objectives what are the main reasons why you decided in the first place to work abroad. From there, you will be able to rebuild the kind of character and attitude needed to start over again and fulfil the ultimate desires of your hypothalamus,” he concluded.
