From housekeeper to business owner: The inspiring journey of an OFW in Dubai

Romaar Guevarra, a 27-year-old entrepreneur and business owner of RosasPandan, has come a long way from his humble beginnings. Born and raised in a remote area in the Philippines surrounded by water, he had to leave his home at a young age to work as a housekeeper in the Philippines. Little did he know that the first step of his incredible journey would lead him to a life-changing experience overseas.

At the tender age of 19, Romaar decided to work abroad as a hotel housekeeper in the UAE. With no prior knowledge of the hotel industry and limited exposure to different cultures, he found it challenging to adapt to his new environment. However, his determination to make a better life for himself and his family back home kept him pushing forward.

Romaar’s decision to work abroad was fueled by the difficult life his family experienced in their hometown. He saw firsthand the hardships they faced, sometimes having nothing at all. This drove him to seek a better future, even if it meant leaving his loved ones behind.

His journey overseas wasn’t easy either. Romaar tried his hand at various jobs, such as working on a fish farm and as a housekeeper in the Philippines. Eventually, he landed in the UAE, where he continued his housekeeping job, working tirelessly to clean 30 to 40 rooms daily for a monthly salary of AED750. After completing his contract, he went on to become a sales manager for a logistics company in Dubai, a position he held for three years. This role allowed him to learn valuable skills, such as communicating with high-level professionals.

Throughout his nine years abroad, Romaar gained a newfound appreciation for life and a broader perspective on the world. He learned how to interact with people from diverse backgrounds and languages, ultimately becoming more independent.

The pandemic brought about a significant turning point in Romaar’s life. During the two years without work, he discovered his passion for entrepreneurship. Though starting a business was not easy, it granted him the time and financial freedom he sought. This led him to establish RosasPandan, a venture that brought him immense satisfaction and fulfillment.

Romaar’s experiences overseas have taught him the importance of resilience and perseverance. He faced numerous struggles along the way, both in the Philippines and abroad, but with faith in God and a strong sense of self, he managed to overcome each obstacle.

His future plans involve continuing his entrepreneurial endeavors, recognizing that overseas work is not a lifelong opportunity. Romaar believes that it is crucial for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to start investing in businesses early on, so they have a solid foundation when they return home.

Romaar offers valuable advice for fellow OFWs who might be struggling abroad. He urges them to remember their “why” – the reason they chose to work overseas – and to stay strong through the challenges they face. Prayer, a positive mindset, and surrounding oneself with motivating people are key factors in overcoming hardships.

He also shares a message of hope for those who might feel lost in their journey, citing Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Romaar’s story serves as a testament to the power of faith, perseverance, and determination in the face of adversity.
