In the heart of the bustling city of Abu Dhabi lies the story of Genalyn Taruc Lagman, a Filipina who braved the odds of being a first-time Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) to transform her life.
Genalyn’s narrative reflects the story of countless OFWs who set out in search of better opportunities, not just for themselves, but for their families back home.
Yet, what sets Genalyn apart is her indomitable spirit and the choices she made to reshape her destiny.
“Being a first-timer OFW, it’s not easy. It takes a lot of hardship and sacrifices, especially being far away from our family,” Genalyn recalls, echoing the sentiments of many who have set foot on foreign lands.
Despite the initial challenges, Genalyn remained resolute.
She shares, “If you have a dream, a family you need to support, and a vision for your future, you will do everything and never stop believing that you can.”
And that belief led her to the doors of the Filipino Institute-Abu Dhabi campus.
“I found Filipino Institute to pursue and help me change my career where I could learn more and expand my knowledge,” she says with gratitude, giving special thanks to Ms. Nancy Malabag Ramos.
“Thanks to Ms. Nancy for being a consistent instructor for us,” Genalyn fondly remarks.
Juggling work and study wasn’t a walk in the park.
“Those times, it’s not easy. You need to work and study in your free time,” she recollects.
But her determination was fueled by a clear vision. From working as a cashier, Genalyn transitioned to a role she had been aspiring for.
“A blessing came. I graduated from FI last February, and even before I officially graduated, I started my new job. Now, I am working in a leading homecare here in the Emirates of Abu Dhabi as a ‘healthcare assistant’.”
In an era where degrees often define success, Genalyn’s story challenges the norms.
“Not a degree holder but I am proud of where I am and what I have become now,” she confidently states.
The medical field, as Genalyn points out, offers continuous learning opportunities, pushing her to “improve more our knowledge.”
For her, the hardships she faced were more than just obstacles – they were blessings in disguise.
“Those sacrifices/hardships are a blessing in disguise,” she reflects.
To her fellow students and OFWs, she offers words of encouragement, “More hard work, believe in you, willingness to learn, dedication, and pray more. Those are our keys to success.”
Looking forward, Genalyn is far from done.
“I’m still continuing to dream for the next chapter of my life,” she says, with gratitude towards the Filipino Institute for playing a pivotal role in her journey.
“Thank you, FI. I am grateful and continue to be inspired. God bless more.”
