Francis Libiran reveals stunning Team PH uniform for Paris 2024 Olympics opening ceremony

Filipino fashion designer Francis Libiran has revealed the official opening ceremony uniform for Team Philippines at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The design, named “Sinag,” features Pintados-inspired details and elements of the Philippine flag, highlighting the nation’s rich culture and heritage.

Libiran shared on Instagram, “Showcasing the Philippines on the global stage, Francis Libiran’s SINAG captures the essence of bravery and fierceness in battle with Pintados-inspired details, reflecting the nation’s rich culture, history, and heritage and the sun emphasizing the breathtaking beauty of the Philippine islands.”

In a recent interview with L’Officiel Philippines, Libiran discussed his inspiration for the Sinag Barong, a genderless piece chosen to reflect the inclusivity and strength of modern Filipino athletes. Upon being approached by the Philippine Olympic Committee, Libiran swiftly sketched his vision and submitted five designs by the end of the day. He chose the barong for its deeply Filipino roots, showcasing intricate embroidery and traditional fabric.

To make the white barong stand out, Libiran added a detachable silk organdy sling embroidered with sun rays and Pintados-inspired warrior patterns in the colors of the Philippine flag. “I wanted our athletes to wear the iconic sun rays [of our flag] closer to their hearts,” he explained. The detachable sling allows the athletes to reuse the barong for other formal events.

Sourcing the right materials, including the silk organdy for the sling and the piña-jusi fabric for the barong, took about two weeks. Libiran and his team faced the additional challenge of coordinating with the athletes to obtain their measurements, often attending training sessions to do so.

Despite the challenges, Libiran is honored and grateful for the opportunity to represent the Philippines on such a significant stage. “Of course, the pressure is there. I’m representing our countrymen. I felt pressured and, at the same time, honored in doing it,” he shared.
