Liam Payne, a former member of the globally successful boy band One Direction, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 31 after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentine police confirmed.
Authorities stated that Payne, who had built a solo career following his time with the chart-topping group, suffered fatal injuries from the fall. Emergency responders were called to the Casa Sur Hotel in the Palermo neighborhood at 5:04 PM local time. Despite arriving at the scene within seven minutes, the city’s emergency medical service chief, Alberto Crescenti, said Payne’s injuries were too severe, and there was no chance of resuscitation.
Payne rose to fame as part of One Direction in 2010, alongside bandmates Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik, after appearing on “The X Factor.” The group went on indefinite hiatus in 2016, and Payne had since pursued a solo career.
Just days before his passing, Payne had attended a concert in Buenos Aires by former bandmate Niall Horan, according to reports.
