A 29-year-old former model has lost his vision after injecting steroids in an attempt to enhance his physique. The revelation was made on a recent episode of “24 Oras.”
Mohammad “Mads” Hugo began his modeling career at a young age of 16 after losing his parents when he was just five years old. While working as a waiter, he was offered an opportunity by a bar owner to model for them. Hugo, in his drive to secure more modeling gigs, took steroids despite the associated health risks.
Many of his peers in the pageantry circuit used steroids, which prompted him to follow suit. “My body underwent significant changes. However, within three months, my vision deteriorated,” Hugo shared. After a short span, he tragically lost vision first in his right eye, soon followed by the left.
In 2019, in an effort to salvage his vision, Hugo underwent surgery. However, the outcome was not as expected. Currently, he can only perceive faint light, and suffers frequent pain due to an inability to afford necessary medication.
Dr. Edgar Leuenberger, examining Hugo’s condition, pointed out, “Mads noticed that the shapes he used to see gradually disappeared. Now, he only sees some light. It appears that glaucoma is a potential cause of his vision loss, even though his cataract surgery went well and he had a tube implant for glaucoma.”
Desperate for aid and battling remorse over his choices, Hugo has reached out to the GMA Kapuso Foundation. “I deeply regret my decision. I hope they can help me,” Hugo expressed.
