Foreign nationals are paying P500,000 to obtain Philippine passports, senator says

Senate Deputy Minority Leader Risa Hontiveros announced an ongoing investigation into allegations that foreign nationals are paying P500,000 for Philippine passports. Hontiveros condemned this activity in a recent statement, emphasizing that Philippine passports are a symbol of national identity and dignity, and should not be treated as mere commodities for sale.

The senator’s office has received reports of this illegal scheme but has not disclosed further details. Hontiveros expressed confidence in the Office of the Ombudsman, led by Samuel Martires, to conduct a thorough investigation. Martires has indicated plans for a motu proprio inquiry into these allegations.

This development follows previous concerns raised by Hontiveros regarding Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (Pogo) facilitating the acquisition of government-issued identification for Chinese Pogo workers. Echoing sentiments of fellow senators, Hontiveros highlighted the gravity of the issue, considering it a significant national security risk, especially amidst rising tensions in the West Philippine Sea.

Hontiveros urged vigilance against the exploitation of the Philippines’ borders and institutions, cautioning against allowing foreign interests to masquerade as national ones. The investigation is expected to provide more clarity on these alarming reports.
