A fisherman met a tragic end on Wednesday night in Barangay South Granada, Boljoon, Cebu, after being dragged by a large fish, according to the police.
Gregorio Viñan Jr. was found lifeless on the shore by authorities following a report, said PSSgt. Sherwin Cejudo of the Boljoon police.
Viñan was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
According to the police, Viñan was fishing when he was pulled by a large grouper, a fish known locally as pugapo.
The victim was spearfishing, catching fish underwater using sharp equipment, Cejudo mentioned.
A companion of the victim told the police that Viñan went underwater but failed to resurface for a long time.
He was later found near a large grouper with the fishing spear embedded in the fish’s body.
The fishing line attached to Viñan’s hunting gear was also wrapped around his body.
Doctors who examined Viñan’s body did not find any external injuries or trauma.
They suspect Viñan drowned in the deep sea after being pulled by the fish.
