Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, part of the M42 group, has made history by performing the first robotic mastectomy in the UAE and across the global Cleveland Clinic network. This pioneering procedure marks a significant milestone in breast cancer care, offering patients a minimally invasive alternative that reduces recovery time and preserves quality of life.
The robotic mastectomy, led by Dr. Ahmad Matalkah of the Breast Surgery Program, utilized the advanced Da Vinci single-port robotic system. This state-of-the-art technology enables surgeons to perform precise tissue removal and immediate breast reconstruction through a small incision under the armpit. This method is less invasive than traditional mastectomy techniques, which typically require larger chest incisions and result in visible scarring and extended recovery periods.
Dr. George Haber, CEO of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, emphasized the impact of this breakthrough, stating, “The introduction of robotic mastectomy at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi represents a transformative step in breast cancer care. By providing a more precise and minimally invasive option, we are enhancing patients’ quality of life and recovery experience.”
Dr. Matalkah highlighted the benefits, noting, “Robotic breast surgery offers precision, minimizes scarring, and allows for faster recovery. Our goal is to help patients heal with confidence and minimal physical scars.” However, he also pointed out that not all patients are suitable candidates, with eligibility depending on factors like tumor size and patient health.
Dr. Tibor G Kovacs, also part of the Breast Surgery Program, elaborated on the reconstruction process, stating, “Robotic mastectomy allows for nipple-sparing techniques and immediate implant-based reconstruction, combining physical and emotional benefits.”
The surgical team underwent specialized training with global experts to ensure proficiency with this new technology.
