First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos clarified the context behind a viral clip of her taking Senate President Chiz Escudero’s champagne glass during the Vin D’Honneur at Malacañan Palace, emphasizing it was a light-hearted moment between friends.
In a statement shared by DZRH radio on June 14, the First Lady explained that she and Escudero were sharing a laugh when she took a sip from his glass. “I’ve known Chiz since my law school days, he studied in UP and I went to Ateneo, we’ve been friends for like, forever. So whether I made him a waiter and or, he responded ‘like a gentleman,’ is between us,” she said.
The event, held on Independence Day, was live-streamed, showing Marcos taking the glass, sipping, and returning it. Marcos recalled Escudero’s praise for her energy after she greeted numerous dignitaries. “When Chiz saw me, he said, ‘Wow bilib din ako sa’yo, may energy ka pa after standing and smiling for over an hour.’ Sabi niya, ‘I’m sure you could use a drink,’” she recounted.
She responded playfully, taking his champagne glass and remarking, “Eww hindi naman malamig ang champagne (Your champagne is not cold),” before returning it. “We both had a good laugh over that,” she added, noting the entire exchange lasted just 10 seconds.
Escudero also addressed the incident, stating on Thursday that he was simply being “gentlemanly” by waiting for the First Lady.
