Fired janitor sets school on fire in Negros Occidental

A fired janitor set fire to a school in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental, as an act of retaliation, causing extensive damage.

According to a GMA News Online report, the incident occurred on June 14, 2024, when the janitor, recently dismissed from his job, burned down the storeroom of Daisy’s ABC School. The school, a well-known institution founded by the Chinese-Filipino Chamber of Commerce and Industry, quickly succumbed to the flames, which then spread to the rest of the building.

The fire also reached the ancestral house of San Carlos City Mayor Renato Gustilo on Ylagan Street. Fortunately, Mayor Gustilo was not at home when the fire broke out. Additionally, the blaze destroyed a historic business building on Locsin Street, owned by the mayor’s grandfather.

Mayor Gustilo stated that the janitor became enraged upon learning of his impending job loss. Overcome with guilt after realizing the extent of the damage, the janitor surrendered to the authorities.

The janitor is currently detained at the San Carlos City Police Station and faces arson charges.
