Filipinos prefer leaders who stand up to China in West Philippine Sea issue

A majority of Filipinos continue to prefer candidates who believe the Philippines should stand firm against China’s aggressive actions in the West Philippine Sea, according to a Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey commissioned by Stratbase Group.

The April 2025 survey found that 75% of respondents favor candidates who advocate for asserting the country’s sovereignty, a slight dip from 78% recorded in February. Meanwhile, those preferring candidates who oppose such a stance rose to 25%, up by three points from the previous survey.

The highest percentage of Filipinos supporting non-assertive candidates came from Class E (41%), followed by Class ABC (28%) and Class D (24%).

SWS conducted face-to-face interviews with 1,800 adult respondents nationwide between April 11 and 14. The survey has a margin of error of ±2%.
