Filipino youth teams across GCC unite as Batang PBA launches its first global edition

Batang PBA is preparing for its first-ever international staging in Doha, extending the league’s grassroots basketball program to Filipino communities across the Middle East. The initiative, led by long-time PBA figure and Ginebra and Gilas Pilipinas deputy coach Richard Del Rosario, together with organizers Mikey and Sarah Calungcaguin and coordinator Coach Mike Aliparo, is set to gather young athletes from six Gulf countries in a multi-division tournament grounded in the values of the Philippine Basketball Association.

The organizers have focused their efforts on the Middle East after years of observing what young Filipinos in the region are missing: a structured development pathway similar to what children in the Philippines receive. Coach Del Rosario said the move was shaped by a problem the group encounters often among overseas communities. “Our Filipino youth here love basketball just as deeply as kids back home, but they rarely get access to structured programs, proper coaching, or a real developmental pathway,” he shared with TGFM. He noted that many children abroad grow up playing in open gyms or informal weekend games without a system that nurtures long-term growth.

With the launch of Batang PBA Middle East, the organizers aim to establish an environment where overseas Filipino kids can train and compete under a framework inspired by PBA standards. Del Rosario described the goal as providing equal opportunities to children outside the Philippines while keeping them connected to their heritage. “Batang PBA Middle East is our answer to that gap,” he said, emphasizing that it offers young athletes a program that strengthens their identity and sense of pride.

The upcoming tournament, to be hosted in Doha, will open four divisions—U12, U14, U16, and U19—ensuring a wide range of athletes can take part. Organizers expect a strong turnout, with clubs and youth groups from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, the UAE, Oman, and Kuwait expressing early interest. According to Del Rosario, the event is shaping up to be one of the largest gatherings of Filipino youth basketball teams in the region. He said the tournament gives young players “proper exposure, meaningful competition, and a platform to showcase their talent.”

One of the defining elements of the Doha edition is its community-centered purpose. While Batang PBA programs in the Philippines focus on local development, this international version brings together children who share a common cultural identity but are scattered across different countries. Del Rosario explained that many of the young participants rarely receive opportunities to compete in an organized, multi-country Filipino tournament. “When they step on the court, they are not just playing basketball,” he said. He highlighted that for many participants, the experience represents a moment to reconnect with their Filipino roots.

The tournament also sets the stage for personal growth far beyond competition. Through structured games and training, participants will be exposed to discipline, teamwork, confidence building, and a deeper appreciation for the Filipino community overseas. Organizers said the program offers young athletes a genuine developmental pathway, whether they aspire to play at higher levels or simply wish to achieve something meaningful through sport.

Teams, players, and parents in the Gulf can already inquire about participation. Registration is accessible to Filipinos across the GCC, regardless of whether they are already part of a club. Organizers said they are prepared to guide every applicant through the process. Inquiries may be sent to batangpbame@gmail.com or through WhatsApp at +966 57 008 0892.

Del Rosario said the broader Filipino community plays a vital role in the event’s success. He encouraged families and supporters to take part in the historic launch of the league’s first international edition. “This tournament is for the entire Filipino community,” he said. “Sama sama natin itaas ang bagong henerasyon ng mga batang Pinoy. One court, One dream, One nation.”
