Filipinos and other workers in British Columbia are set to benefit from a recent salary increase, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) announced yesterday. The provincial government has implemented a 3.9 percent increase in the hourly minimum wage for the lowest-paid workers, including residential caretakers and camp leaders. The new rate has risen from $16.75 to $17.40 per hour.
The DMW emphasized that the minimum wage applies regardless of payment structure, whether employees are paid on commission or incentive basis. Employers are required to ensure that workers’ pay meets or exceeds the current minimum wage for the hours they worked.
The agency also warned aspiring Filipino workers in Canada to only engage with licensed recruitment agencies, as the collection of recruitment fees for jobs in British Columbia and other Canadian provinces is prohibited under Canada’s “no placement fee policy.”
