Filipino workers in Bahrain line up for one-stop gov’t services at embassy outreach

Manama — A significant number of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) converged at the Philippine Embassy in Manama on January 9, 2026, to access essential government services during the Lingkod Kababayan Friday outreach.

Ambassador-designate Gines Jaime Ricardo D. Gallaga and Vice Consul Charlie F. Prenicolas were present at the event, showcasing the Embassy’s ongoing dedication to supporting Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Bahrain. The Ambassador reassured the community that this outreach isn’t just a one-off event, saying, “We plan to hold this once a month. We encourage everyone to check our website and Facebook page for updates, or join the Embassy’s WhatsApp group to receive timely announcements.”

Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) patiently lined up as embassy personnel and representatives from various government agencies worked collaboratively to efficiently address their concerns. The initiative aimed to bring essential government services closer to Filipino workers abroad, reducing the need for multiple appointments and minimizing time away from work.

Participants had the opportunity to access a range of consular services, including passport renewals, civil registry transactions, notarial services, and Assistance to Nationals (ATN) services, along with the chance to register for Overseas Voting.

Key partner agencies like the Migrant Workers Office (MWO), Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), and the Social Security System (SSS) were on hand to offer consultations and tackle issues related to welfare, employment, and social security. This event also made it easy for registered overseas voters to pick up their COMELEC IDs, turning the gathering into a convenient one-stop shop for vital government services.

The OFW beneficiaries expressed their appreciation for the program, noting that it enabled them to process essential documents, seek guidance on labor-related concerns, and better understand their social security benefits, all in one convenient venue.

Guaria Banto Panda, a beauty consultant from Riffa, shared how the recent initiative has been a real game-changer for OFWs who struggle to visit the embassy during regular working hours. “I can’t go on a regular day because of my job, and taking leave to renew my passport isn’t easy. This initiative is fantastic for us. Big thanks to the Philippine Embassy for their amazing work,” Panda said.

Meanwhile, Rowena, a 48-year-old housemaid from Hamad Town who prefers to stay anonymous, shared her experience of wanting to get back on track with her SSS contributions after putting her monthly payments on hold. “I really want to keep paying my contributions. This is my chance to ask about the details so I can reach the required 120 months and eventually qualify for the SSS pension plan. I heard I can also handle this online,” she mentioned.

The Lingkod Kababayan Friday initiative is a vital way for the Embassy to connect directly with Filipino workers. It helps address their concerns quickly while building trust and cooperation.

The Philippine Embassy in Manama reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining programs that promote the welfare, protection, and empowerment of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), emphasizing that such initiatives are vital in strengthening unity, resilience, and solidarity within the Filipino community abroad.
