Filipino worker sentenced to death for drug case in Saudi returns home after government intervention

A Filipino worker who had been sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia for drug-related charges has been granted freedom and safely returned to the Philippines, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) confirmed.

The unnamed overseas Filipino worker was arrested on April 2, 2023, and later detained at Riyadh General Jail in Al Kharj. He was convicted on September 24, 2023, for possession of illegal drugs and faced the death penalty.

The DMW said his release was the result of sustained diplomatic and legal efforts led by the agency, in close coordination with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA). The worker was repatriated on June 10, 2025.

“Currently, the OFW is temporarily housed at a hotel in Pasay City under OWWA’s care while awaiting his flight to Butuan City,” the DMW said, noting that the agency assured him of continued support during his visit to the DMW Central Office on Wednesday.

Throughout the legal battle, the DMW ensured the OFW had proper legal representation and access to financial aid, which helped secure his right to due process and eventual return to the country.
