Filipino trainer in Dubai shatters UAE powerlifting records, earns international recognition

What once seemed impossible has now become a reality for Jesus “Jhao” Tolentino Jr., a 36-year-old Filipino personal trainer in Dubai who recently etched his name in the UAE’s powerlifting history books.

Representing the under 66kg category, Tolentino broke all three national records in squat, bench press, and deadlift, along with the total weight record, during the 2025 Rising Showdown in Fujairah—ultimately securing the title of overall champion.

“Breaking all national records is an experience characterized by a powerful mix of emotions,” he said. “Yung excitement and happiness of achieving something na akala ko dati impossible to reach… and an overwhelming sense of accomplishment.”

Originally from the Philippines, Tolentino has spent the last nine years working as a personal trainer under Alsaqer Management LLC in Dubai. He recalled starting out in a commercial gym before making the decision to pursue professional credentials through the UAE’s Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) certification.

His rise to powerlifting excellence wasn’t an overnight journey. “Focus on small progression,” he advised. “Reward yourself every 12 weeks of training—like the satisfaction of getting stronger and achieving personal goals.”

Tolentino emphasized that his dual role as a trainer and athlete demands discipline. His days often begin before sunrise. “Uuwi kang pagod, and then you need to wake up again at 5 a.m. to train your clients—wala ka nang rest,” he shared.

Despite the exhaustion, the payoff has been life-changing. His recent nomination to represent the UAE in the Asian Powerlifting Competition marks a career milestone. “I feel so happy and proud of myself to be chosen,” he said. “That’s the first time in my life to compete in international powerlifting federations.”

With his story, Tolentino hopes to inspire others chasing big goals. “Don’t stop dreaming,” he said. “Be consistent with what you want to achieve, focus, and never give up. Lastly—always pray.”
